Album Review - REM, Accelerate
YYYYY Excellent
Which REM do you prefer? Pre- Green? Post-Green? Post Bill Berry? Well no matter, because whichever version you preferred you will most likely really like this record. When was the last time you cranked up a REM album and rocked out? Some might say Monster, some Document, some might even say Pageant, it does not matter because they rock out on this record better then they have probably ever done. The album bolts us out of the starting gate with Living Well Is The Best Revenge, and continues give us a run for our money through Supernatural Superserious, and past Accelerate. Even when they slow us down a bit with Until the Day is Done the energy and flow of the album continues to move us along. The music is mostly old school guitars, bass, and drums with Stipe’s vocals upfront and present. His lyrics are accessible and defiant - but not with the impertinence of youth - with the wisdom, knowledge and experience that comes with age. On this album, I feel like REM has lifted me up and passed me along like I’m crowd surfing; giving me a great ride, and then finally on the last hit of the last note of the last song, drops me to the ground in such a way that I want to get back up and be passed around again.

I saw Peter Case at the old 9:30 Club in like 1986 or 87, and Peter Buck jumped onstage for the encore and played guitar for A Million Miles Away. I wasn't familiar with the Plimsouls stuff at the time, didn't know what song it was until I asked Peter Case himself about it at Jammin' Java in 2006.
After that show at the 9:30 Club, I snuck downstairs to the dressing rooms with a bag full of 45s to get Peter Case to sign. While he was talking to some other fan, I showed the records to Peter Buck. Buck was utterly amazed and jealous over a couple of them, never had seen them before.
"I don't have this one," he exclaimed. "Man, I don't have this one either!"
Then he realized that they were import pressings.
"Oh ... they're European," he sighed, a little disappointed. "I don't collect European."

I just picked up Accelerate on Sunday. It was dreary and rainy. I popped it into my CD player on the drive home. "Living Well..." came cranking thru the speakers. I rolled down the window and put my face out to the wind and rain like a big puppy. It was now a happy, happy day...
